Things You Can Do

Help us build a useful list of things we might do

We are in the process of building a list of useful things any one could do the help reduce carbon emissions. Some of the ideas have little or no costs others will certainly have upfront costs but will hopefully save money in the long term.

If you have good ideas to add to the list email them to info@whataww.org and we will add some of them to  list.

This current list draws considerably on an excellent leaflet, Live For The Planet, created by Friends of The Earth Alnwick.

Reduce your Energy Bills

  1. Turn down thermostats a degree or two and wear an extra layer.
  2. Buy a timer for your shower. They only cost  about £2.50  but could save £30 a year if you spend just a minute less in the shower each day. Buy a shower head that reduces water flow - costs about £20 or a flow regulator costs about £3.50 see -https://www.savewatersavemoney.co.uk/products/showers
  3. Close your curtains as soon as its getting dark.
  4. Check the insulation of your home and upgrade it.
  5. Shut Doors to keep heat in
  6. Put a lid on your saucepan when cooking.
  7. Wash clothes less frequently.

Transport

  1. Think about your journeys which could be on public transport.
  2. Walk or cycle when possible.
  3. Consider giving friends a lift. Find ways of sharing rides to reduce car use.
  4. If using a car keep your speed in check and accelerate gently .
  5. Seriously consider an all electric car.
  6. Fly less, especially long haul.

Food

  1. Don't waste food.
  2. Eat less meat and go for locally produced pasture fed meat where possible.
  3. Use a pressure cooker or slow cooker.
  4. Grow your own vegetables and fruit if possible.
  5. Think about food miles - eat local produce when possible.
